Winter is definitely here. Shorter days, less sunshine, and cold cold weather lead so many of us wanting to stay inside under a warm blanket all day! Luckily, this is completely normal for this time of year, and there are many ways to beat those winter blues to give you more energy throughout the day. These are a few of my tried and true methods that leave me feeling great and ready to tackle the winter months!
5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues
1. Get Moving!
Exercise may not sound like the most appealing thing when it’s cold and dark outside, but those endorphins can make such a huge difference in brightening my mood! It feels great to have a regular exercise schedule, and taking some time for myself to care for my body really pays off. I’ve found that I really enjoy fitness classes where I can focus on myself but also be surrounded by other people working towards the same goals. Sometimes group positivity is all I need to stay focused and not give up!
- 2. Get a Spray Tan!
This one is simple, but I’ve found that it actually lifts my mood and raises my confidence a lot! I love being tan after getting sun during the summer, so why not experience that same feeling in the winter? I will also be honest, I feel like having a spray tan takes a good 5 pounds off me, which definitely makes me feel better. It just gives me life. If tanning isn’t your thing, getting a manicure, facial, or massage can have the same effect–just pick a self-care service that makes you feel like yourself again!
3. Book a Vacation (or Stay-cation!)—
Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m obsessed with Disney World, and I miss it every time I have to come back home. For us, it’s completely worth traveling down to Florida because of the fun and relaxation we all experience (plus the extra sunshine really helps to raise those Vitamin-D levels)! This time of year, I’m really just craving somewhere sunny and warm. Getting something on the calendar even if it’s not immediate really gives me something to look forward to.
If a mini vacation isn’t realistic at the time though, there’s always the possibility for a stay-cation! This could mean going out to dinner and staying in a hotel for one night, taking a road trip for the weekend, or even booking a spa day! Whatever you can do to take a break or give you something to look forward to is great for battling the blues!
4. Eat Healthy!—
Especially with the holidays just ending, I find that I initially tend to reach for sweets, comfort foods, and wine but I know that I feel so much better when I’m eating a balanced diet! Veggies, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats can do wonders for my mood and energy level, and it also feels great to get in the kitchen and make something delicious for myself and my family! And the great thing about it being 2020 is that there are so many grocery home-delivery services now, so I don’t have to stress if I can’t make it to the store! I recently tried out Walmart Inhome and was blown away by how easy and efficient it was for our family. We also just started using Hello Fresh as well. I chose the option with low calories, but there are so many options for any dietary restrictions you have.
Trust me when I say that this actually makes a HUGE difference in how I feel! It seems like there are always so many things that I have to do, so when I get something checked off my list, I finally feel like I can breathe again. Doing a clean-out after the holidays is a big one for me–with Charlie getting new toys and clothing for Christmas, it was necessary to get rid of some old things that didn’t fit her anymore or that she was no longer interested in. Having less clutter in the house feels great, and I feel so accomplished that I was able to get that done! Even if you check off something small, you can feel great in knowing that you did it!
